In the late 1960s, planners proposed a massive hiking route across the northern United States, stretching from North Dakota through Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York, with plans to eventually connect to the Appalachian Trail in Vermont. The vision became reality in 1980 when Congress officially designated the North Country National Scenic Trail as a National Scenic Trail. Since then, volunteers, the North Country Trail Association, and federal agencies have gradually linked together thousands of miles of trail. Though some gaps still rely on road walks, the route is now mostly hikeable end to end and spans roughly 4,600 miles...including a pit stop in beautiful Cedar Springs, which has been designated as a Trail Town.
