🔴 History of the Red Flannel Festival in Cedar Springs, MI 🔴 The Red Flannel Festival in Cedar Springs, Michigan, is one of the state’s oldest and most beloved community events, with roots stretching back to the 1930s. The story began in the winter of 1936, during what was described as “the worst winter in years” with heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures. A New York feature writer lamented that “here we are in the midst of an old-fashioned winter and there are no red flannels in the USA to go with it.” The local newspaper, The Cedar Springs Clipper (owned by “The Clipper Gals” Nina Babcock and Grace Hamilton), responded with a fiery RED HOT editorial declaring, “Just because Saks Fifth Avenue does not carry red flannels, it doesn’t follow that no one in the country does. CEDAR SPRINGS’ merchants have red flannels!” The Associated Press picked up the story, and orders began pouring in from across the U.S. By 1939, the tradition had grown. On November 11, 1939, Cedar Springs held its first Red Flannel Day, featuring the crowning of a Queen, a lumberjack supper, and the creation of the Order of the Red Flannel Knights of the Red Flannel Drawers — a humorous society where members wore badges and “scarlet certificates” as proof of membership. The first members and were known for their “drop seaters” (a local term for the festival’s signature red flannel display) The festival became a way for Cedar Springs to celebrate its identity, even during the Great Depression, when many small towns were struggling. Over the decades, it has been held annually — on the first Saturday in October — making it the 15th oldest festival in Michigan. The Keystone Kops — a famous red flannel-themed police squad — became a festival icon, arresting anyone not wearing red and offering “get out of jail free” buttons.
