THE MISSING FILL LINE By law, beer, wine, and shot glasses in the European Union must have a fill line or volume marker to ensure that customers in a bar or restaurant are getting the true amount of wine or beer they ordered. Even before that, Germany had its own laws requiring fill lines on glassware used in commercial establishments. No such laws exist in the US and Canada, although some establishments voluntarily use beverage glasses with a fill line. In 2013, lawmakers in the US state of Michigan introduced legislation that would require that a "pint” glass of beer actually contained a full US pint (16 ounces). But the law did not pass, and as of 2026, no US state has any similar law. Known in German as a "Füllstrich" or "Füllmarke", there are several English terms for that word: fill/filling line, pour line, Plimsoll line (originally for ship load lines), or volume marker. But beer and wine drinkers in the North America rarely drink those beverages from a glass with a fill line. There are official fill-marker codes for various German glassware manufacturers, including "Bö" for Böckling, "ra" or "rastal" for Rastal, or "Kö" for Kössinger. Credit: Trexer, GFDL, via Wikimedia Commons (DE) FILL LINE HISTORY But the history of the fill line predates any EU laws by at least a couple of centuries, and like the "Reinheitsgebot" (beer purity law), probably originated in Bavaria. In the early 19th century there were almost a hundred various "official" measurements for a beer jug/mug all across Bavaria's regions. Between 1809 and 1811, the Kingdom of Bavaria introduced a uniform capacity for beer, the "Munich beer jug/mug", also known as a measure ("das Maß"), defined as 1069 ml, slightly over a liter. In 1879, in all of Germany, the official measure became an even liter, still known today as "ein Litermaß". However, the fill line began even earlier, in the Bavarian town of Keferloh, today a district of Grasbrunn. Keferloh was known for its annual market fair, the "Keferloher Montag" that began in 1325 and became Bavaria's largest gathering of beer drinkers in the Kingdom of Bavaria until Munich's Oktoberfest surpassed it the 1850s. As the Keferloh festival increased in popularity, the organizers needed a uniform, low-cost container to meet the demand and avoid conflicts when containers ran out. Clay for ceramic mugs was readily available in Bavaria, and with the stein's special glaze, beer also stayed cool longer. A fill line (Füllstrich) on the inside of the beer stein ensured that fair visitors received the proper amount of beer. To this day, the ceramic beer stein is favored by most serious beer drinkers. GLASSWARE Beer and wine are properly served in the appropriate glassware or ceramic ware. The glass shapes are designed to enhance the taste and aroma of the beverage put in the glass. Fill lines also help avoid over- or under-filling the glass. Common beer glass types include Pilsner, Hefeweizen, Mass (ceramic liter stein), pint glass, etc. Only barbarians drink beer straight out of a bottle or can. DOES FOAM COUNT? Another argument in the case for fill lines applies to beer. A good draft beer has a foamy head. There's a rule of thumb concerning proper beer pouring, allowing for the head above the fill line. The two-fingers rule mandates a head of that height – above the fill line! A PINT OF BEER Although Great Britain officially went metric in the 1970s, beer is still served in a pint glass. A British "pint' is 19.5 Imperial fluid oz., which is 554 ml. Traditionally a pint glass has a crown symbol that certified, when filled to the brim, it contains a full pint. Instead of a fill line, there is a "half pint" line. When the UK was an EU member (until 2020), it followed EU labeling laws. Küsterer Original Weissbier - This historical Bavarian wheat beer dates back to nearly 600 year old tradition and is a tribute to the classic roots of the "Hefeweizen" style. With notes of nuttiness and banana nut bread, this liquid bread is created entirely from four ingredients: malted grain, water, hops and yeast. While our Küsterer Modern is a typical pale hefeweizen, a style which evolved in the mid-1960's, and our Küsterer Dunkelweizen is a lovely dark wheat, the Original is a unique special treat and remains distinct from either of the more common weizen version. There are only a handful of Bavarian brewers still making this classic style and, so far as we are aware, we are basically the only ones in the New World making this style regularly. The Original was a winner at the 2016 & 2020 Great American Beer Festival, named the "Best Wheat Beer in the U.S." at the 2017 & 2019 London World Beer Awards, wins at the 2018 Great International Beer, Cider, Mead & Sake Competition, at the 2019 International Beer Awards, the 2021 Australian International Beer Awards, was awarded Gold at 2019 U.S. Open Beer Championship.
