Bavarian Weissbier evolved about 6 centuries ago and contains at least 51% malted wheat. It was the royal "exception" to the Reinheitsgebot (beer purity law). It has always been "hazy," the only exception being a modern, filtered "Kristallweizen" or Crystal Wheat. Original or "brick colored" versions harken back to the original recipes, whereas the pale and dark versions were established by larger breweries in the mid-1960's. All are popular today, particularly in Bavaria where wheat beers comprise about a quarter of the market. The largest wheat beer breweries are Erdinger (independent), Paulaner (Heineken group), and Franziskaner (ABInBev group). Other well know brands include Weihenstephan (State owned), Schneider (independent), and Hacker-Pschorr (Heineken group). Some of our favorites include small, family-owned brewers, such as Unertl, Dachsbräu, Karg, and Plank. They are worth seeking out if you visit Bavaria. Labor Day originated in the late 19th century as a creation of the labor movement to honor the contributions and achievements of American workers. The idea has often been credited to leader Peter McGuire. The first celebration was held on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, organized by the Central Labor Union with a turnout of about 10,000 workers, who took unpaid time off to march from City Hall to Union Square. Oregon became the first state to officially recognize the holiday on February 21, 1887. Congress passed an act making it a legal public holiday, and President Grover Cleveland signed it into law on June 28, 1894. Enjoy the day and thank the American worker.
